JPY to EUR: reading Japanese price tags
On the ground you need the other direction — a yen price in front of you, converted into euros. At 1 EUR ≈ 184 JPY:
- ¥100 ≈ €0.54 — a vending-machine drink
- ¥500 ≈ €2.72 — a coffee or a convenience-store meal item
- ¥1,000 ≈ €5.44 — a bowl of ramen
- ¥5,000 ≈ €27 — dinner out
- ¥10,000 ≈ €54 — the largest banknote
The yen has no decimal places, so every price is a whole number: ¥2,480, never ¥24.80. Four-digit prices are completely ordinary.
A quick mental method at this rate: drop two zeros from the yen price and halve it. ¥4,000 → 40 → about €22 (the true figure is €21.70). Close enough for a snap decision in a shop; use the app when precision matters.
